Portland Cement Uses

In construction, there have many more uses for Portland cement. They are –

  1. Portland cement is now widely used in construction to make concrete.
  2. This cement exists the maximum of concrete masonry units.
  3. This cement is generally used in various structures like a dam, bridges, buildings, pavements, and where the soil conditions are normal.
  4. This cement is normally used for repairs and fill up the crack in the floor and walls.
  5. Where in construction immediately hardness has required this Portland cement is used.
  6. We also used Portland cement as a filler material, plastering material, and floor surfaces smooth material.
  7. Where the construction cost should be reduced the Portland cement is used. Because the price of this cement is low from the other cement.
  8. Uses of this cement reduced air pollution. So it is used to reduce the pollution of nature.
  9. This cement is used to reduce the risk of cracking. Because this cement has a good crack resisting property.
  10. It is commonly used to obtain a smooth surface of the floor of the building.
  11. We can use this cement for a general construction purpose.
  12. This cement we use because it can give us our desired shape and size according to the construction.
  13. The Portland cement is used in the construction where special properties are not required.
  14. This cement is very strong under compressive load so it is used in construction.
  15. This cement is usually used in the form of cement mortar or cement concrete.

To make the Portland cement limestone, and clay or shale are mixed. In this way, we can use the Portland cement in the various works –

  1. We can use the Portland cement to make a cement mortar mixed with water and sand.
  2. By the Portland cement, we can prepare cement concrete by mixed with water, sand, and aggregate.
  3. This cement is used as a binding material.
  4. This cement we use because it can give us our desired shape and size according to the construction.
  5. We can use this cement for a general construction purpose.
  6. We also used Portland cement as a filler material, plastering material, and floor surfaces smooth material.
  7. This cement is used as a protective material. This cement protects the outer walls of the building from the dam.

Portland cement is an intimate mixture of calcium carbonate, silicon, iron, and magnesium. Nowadays it is used for most of the concrete structure. It is used for various purposes in construction –

  1. It is used for many constructions like buildings construction, hospital construction, school construction, bridges construction, dam construction, and used for various industrial construction.
  2. It is used for reducing the setting time of concrete.
  3. It is used for the build an economical structure.
  4. It is used for reducing the pollution of nature. Because the component that is used to make it is natural. as like, limestone, silicon, fly ash, iron, etc.

How Is Portland Cement Made

  1. There is a simple process and need some material to make Portland cement. The materials that are needed for this are limestone, silicon, fly ash, iron, and aluminium, etc.
  2. At first raw materials of calcium carbonate, silicon, iron oxide are crushed and mixed, then the crushed raw materials are placed into a rotating cement kiln.
  3. The kiln is horizontally placed whose one side is slightly up from the other side.
  4. The length of the kiln is approximately 90 meters and the diameter is 3 to 4 meters.
  5. The downside of the kiln set a high-temperature flame that’s temperature lies between 1450 to 1500° C
  6. On the other end of the kiln, the raw materials are placed. After the placing of raw materials when the kiln slowly rotted the raw materials goes downward and in contact with a high flame, the material converts into tricalcium silicate,  dicalcium silicate, and tricalcium aluminate.
  7. All materials that have come out from the kiln are solid. This solid form is known as clinker.
  8. At last, all clinker is finely ground to produce Portland cement.
  9. Some gypsum should be added to control the rate of hardening of the cement.

Portland cement is a finely ground element that’s mixtures of limestone, and clay or limestone and shell. In 1824 of England inventor Joseph Aspdin saw the similarities of this, cement to the Portland stone.

The limestone from Isle Portland, when mixed with water the calcium silicate, and the other components, started chemically reaction with them and heat of hydration start that makes the cement hard and strengthens.

For all the similarities to the Portland stone to this cement In 1824 of England inventor Joseph Aspdin named this cement the Portland cement.

Types of Portland Cement

By the American Society for Testing and Materials, there are five types of Portland cement-

  • Type-1 : Ordinary Portland Cement
  • Type-2 : Modified Portland Cement
  • Type-3 : High Early Strength Cement
  • Type-4 : Low Heat Cement
  • Type-5 : Sulfate Resistant

Portland Cement Uses

Portland cement is used to make almost all concrete. It is also the principal cement used in most masonry mortars and renders. The most commonly used type of Portland cement is Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), but there are other varieties available, such as white Portland cement.

How to Use Portland Cement?

  1. Mix Portland cement with water and an aggregate (usually gravel and sand) to make concrete. The cement is then cast into the desired shape and can become a load-bearing material when it dries.
  2. Mix Portland cement with sand and water to make mortar. Mortar is used to make bricklaying mortars, stuccos, plasters and grouts.
  3. Use up to 70 percent furnace slag to make blastfurnace cement. This blend is cheap because the primary ingredient is normally a waste product. Blastfurnace cement has a high final strength and good sulfate resistance but takes longer to harden and has lower tolerance for heat.
  4. Use up to 30 percent fly ash to make flyash cement. Flyash cement has good early and final strength but is only economical to make in volcanic areas where fly ash is readily available.
  5. Mix Portland cement with sulfoaliminates to make expansive cements. Sulfoaluminates tend to expand when they dry which counteracts the tendency of Portland cement to contract. This allows large slabs to be poured at once without using contraction joints.

How Is Portland Cement Made?

Portland cement, binding material in the form of a finely ground powder, usually grey, that is manufactured by burning and grinding a mixture of limestone and clay or limestone and shale.

Why Is It Called Portland Cement

The inventor Joseph Aspdin, of England, patented the basic process in 1824, naming it for the resemblance of the cement when set to portland stone, a limestone from the Isle of Portland
